"The Best Art Supply Store Doesn't Sell Art Supplies"

  • What if you didn't need any store for art supplies? Like using juice for watercolor or sticks outside for a sculpture?
This bear is made out of pine needles.. I love the idea of making animals out of something you can find in the wilderness.
  •  Another cool idea is using noodles to sculpt a face. Noodles (when cooked) are smooth and easily bendable. Sculpting something with them would be incredibly easy...

    • What if a bird could be made out of feathers? That would be interesting because it would look so realistic considering birds have feathers...
      • Carving books or burning books to create another aspect of art is so fascinating because it's something unexpected. You wouldn't think destroying a book would have anything to do with art until you see the final piece.

      • Using wax is one of my favorites... melting wax can create a sculpture or even be used for paint. Different types of art can be made out of wax, one of my favorites is the melted crayon art, which has become very popular over the years.

my favorite post modern principles

Interaction of text and image is one of my favorite post modern principles. The idea of a picture and text coming together to interplay between two elements is great for things like ads, commercials, logos, and banners. It is simple, and to the point where the viewer can understand the meaning and appreciate the combination.
Hybridity is also another interesting concept where today's artists see the continuity of their bodies of work as the themes they explore, rather than the particular media they use. Two concepts can come together to work as one main idea. Many artists routinely incorporate various media into their pieces, whatever is required to fully investigate the subject.

The term juxtaposition is useful in helping students to discuss the familiar shocks of contemporary life in which images and objects from various realms and sensibilities come together in intentional clashes or in random happenings. I like juxtaposition because it is interesting to see what two opposites can come together to create a different perspective on objects.

What is our purpose?

Before I created a question, I had to think of different significant words that had an underlying meaning. One of the words that came to mind was useless. What makes us useless? Are people born useless? Are there objects in life that are useless? The more I thought about it, the more I realized that everything is useless until given a purpose. I thought of different examples like how a seed turns into a flower or how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly and how they were once nothing special, but now something beautiful and purposeful. My favorite idea was how an ugly, fat pig turns into delicious, beautiful bacon. I decided to create this image by using colored pencils, paper, scissors, and glue. The bacon now demonstrates how the pig's purpose was to make food.

is art without meaning decoration?

I think that not everyone may interpret the meaning of art in the same way. A piece of artwork is different for everyone who encounters it. What is meaningful and purposeful to one person may have no effect on someone else who viewing the same art. Also, someone who is decorating their home can not physically put emotional value in every single aspect of decorating. For example a lamp is a lamp, you simply pick which one looks or works better, not every single object in an household is going to have a purpose other than to function and/or look pretty. Things like paint, pattern, pictures, paintings, and signs on the wall could have a significant meaning and emotional connection. The picture of the Nana's Kitchen is a sign my Nana has in her kitchen. This decoration has an emotional connection because it was a gift to her from my mother.

The missing piece

For my project, I used shape. I wanted an interesting shape so I cut out a cardboard square and cut triangles out of the sides. I then pasted the cut outs to the other side of the square to make the unique shape I repeated over and over again. The media I used was paint. I wanted to use paint because it was the quickest way to complete this project. Coloring with marker or colored pencils would have taken wayyy too long. Lastly, the subject is the missing piece. I left this piece out manly because Sands told me to, but I realized that it made this piece more unique, the missing piece could make people question why it wasn't included. Different ideas could form about the missing piece. Definitely made this project a little more interesting. :)

portraits

katie thought that we should do a portrait of john travolta because she liked his look in the movie grease. We first decided to use cd cases but later realized that the actual cds would be easier. we had to paint the different shades of grey and black and then posted them on the wall according to what the order was on katies picture of him. As we started putting them on the wall, it just looked like a bunch of random cds, but as you step back and take a farther look, the piece really came together. I thought this project was risky because i wasnt sure how it was going to come out or if it was even going to work. to be honest i was kind of nervous, but the different shades of cds side by side really do look like john (or elvis) from far away so i am very satisified with this project. We had to move around the bottom row a lot becasue the mouth never seemed to look right. but it all came together.

sticky situation

For my sticky situation, i wanted to paint something that was literally sticky. so i thought of foods or candys that would work for this project. Melting icecream is obviously sticky so thats what i painted. There are many patterns in my painting. such as the patterns on my icecream cone, and the repition of the circles in the background. My choice of media was acrylic paint and it was difficult to create a certain type of brown i wanted. Whenever i did find the perfect shade, i'd run out and have to try and create it again. i also hated how many times i had to paint the background but it came out how i wanted the end so its all good.
